It’s the 21st Anniversary of In The Band!
The world was a very different place when In The Band was founded in 2002. While we have adapted to new technologies and kept our ears open to new sounds throughout the years, our mission remains the same: to empower the youth of Los Angeles through access to music education and mentoring in underinvested communities throughout the county.
Since our inception we have sought to inspire young people to access and express their creativity and to tell their own stories through music. While every program and every student is different and unique, this journey often begins in a very similar way: we put instruments in students’ hands, choose a song they connect with, and show them how to work together as a band to play it. The students go on to learn multiple instruments, compose original music, and perform for their communities.
For many of the students we have worked with over the years, this might be the first time they experience music not as an observer, but as a participant. Suddenly music is not just something made only by other people and a source of passive entertainment, it is something that they themselves can create, something of their own. Being in the band provides a place for friendship, collaboration, and self-expression, as well as a safe space in the after-school hours.
Music education has been linked to improvements in overall academic performance and increased school attendance. It also instills a lifelong love and understanding of music, and the creation of audiences that are open to innovative artistry and challenging new ideas in music.

We've been providing excellent music education since 2002 and served over 16,000 children, K through 12, with their first exposure to musicianship.
